JOB SUMMARY:
Senior-level Mechanical Engineer to provide “hands-on” technical direction to, and coordination of, other project team members (e.g. engineers, and CAD drafters and document control). Responsible for the design (for functionality as well as for cost reduction), implementation, testing, and troubleshooting of highly complex mechanical and electro-mechanical subsystems used in the linear particle accelerator (Linac) products. Project management responsibility includes input into and adherence to budgets and schedules.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Engineering design of complex mechanical and electro-mechanical devices. Specifies and performs or oversees relevant engineering test, calculations, or other work needed to complete design. Design work includes layout drawings, interpretation of specifications which includes both in-house and customer specs, and collection and interpretation of information from multiple sources.
- Oversees production of appropriate documentation of design work, primarily by guiding work of designers and drafters and document control. Approves engineering documents related to design work.
- Guides procurement of parts and material for construction. Interfaces with external suppliers and internal shop personnel regarding fabrication or assembly details and to resolve technical problems. Writes manufacturing procedures or specifications relevant to new design.
- Participates in process development of new or specialized fabrication processes.
- Problem solving by the application of sound, broad based engineering knowledge.
- Provides work leadership and technical training to lower level technical personnel.
- Frequent telephone or fax contact with customers and suppliers.
- Requires use of personal computer, telephone and other office machines; photocopier, fax machine.
- Support ISO9001 Implementation.
- Support to obtain CE-marking certificate and compliance with RoHS directive.
OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS:
- Provides support for modification of existing equipment or product lines.
- Participates in technical discussions and technical presentations with customers.
- Provides input to technical proposals for new jobs.
- Intermittent travel to customers and/or vendor sites by automobile, train or airplane.
- Performs other duties as assigned or directed.
PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Lift and carry 35 pounds occasionally. Communicate by speech and hearing continuously. Write by hand and keyboard; manual dexterity for computer mouse. Movement within office complex and in confined spaces throughout the machines. Communicate by telephone and in person. Visual acuity needed for computer, equipment and reading of sketches, drawings, blueprints and documents. Ability to travel by airplane, train, bus or automobile.
MENTAL ACTIVITIES REQUIRED TO PERFORM ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Complex reading, writing and math skills. Visualize 3-dimensional relationships. Perception, comprehension and analysis. Independent judgment and initiative.
JOB CONDITIONS:
Works alone and with others in a general office and laboratory environment.
QUALIFICATIONS:
BSME and at least 7 years mechanical and electro-mechanical engineering experience. Extensive familiarity with materials, fabrication, assembly processes and high vacuum systems. Strong computer aided design (CAD) skills and Project Management (developing project specifications, schedules and costs) experience. Knowledge of accelerator structure design and related manufacturing technologies a plus. PE is preferable.
