AccSys PL-7 Injector Linac for Proton Therapy Project in Italy

Pleasanton, CA - March 14, 2000

Dr. Robert W. Hamm, President and CEO of AccSys Technology, Inc. announced today that the company received a contract in December, 1999 to provide a Model PL-7 proton linear accelerator (linac) to the Italian laboratory ENEA (Ente per le Nuove Tecnologie, L'Energia e L'Ambiante) for the TOP project (Terapia Oncologica con Protoni). This accelerator will serve as the injector linac for the proton therapy system which is being designed and constructed by ENEA in collaboration with the Italian National Institute of Health, ISS (Istituto Superiore di Sanita). The Model PL-7 linac for the TOP project is a slightly modified version of the AccSys PULSAR®7 system and will also be used by TOP for production of 18F for FDG.

Dr. Hamm reported, "This is the fourth proton linac that we have sold for use in a proton therapy facility. We believe that an AccSys linac has become the accelerator of choice for this important medical therapy application." AccSys installed the company's first synchrotron injector proton linac in 1989 at the Loma Linda University Proton Therapy Center in Loma Linda, CA where it continues to be a key component in a system that treats up to 120 patients each day. In addition to the Loma Linda installation, the company has supplied proton therapy injector systems to Hitachi Ltd. (1998) and to Mitsubishi Electric Corporation (1997) for use in the proton therapy systems to be installed in Tsukuba and Shizouka, respectively, in Japan.

The sale of this system is of particular significance because it will be the first AccSys linac also dedicated to the production of 18F for FDG in Europe. According to Dr. Hamm: "This system will validate the production capability of the Model PL-7 for this important medical application." PULSAR® systems represent the next generation of equipment for the production of positron radiotracers, which are used in medicine for research and diagnostic imaging.

AccSys Technology is the world's leading commercial producer of rf ion linacs. The Company was founded in 1985 to commercialize advanced radiofrequency (rf) ion linac technology for applications in medicine, industry and research, with emphasis on developing an innovative system for producing the short-lived radiotracers used in medical positron imaging. AccSys has produced and installed 19 rf ion linac systems worldwide since 1987.
